Description
Ferdinand Barbedienne (French, 1810-1892). Large seven-light gilt bronze and frosted glass table lamp. The central component is a gilt bronze vase featuring a relief frieze of classical mythological female figures in draped attire. The vase is set upon a waisted foot and flanked by small scrolled handles. An elaborate bouquet of gilt bronze stems, foliage, and buds emerges from the neck of the vase. These branches support six sockets fitted with frosted glass shades in the form of blooming roses. A seventh, central branch rises to a single flame-form frosted glass shade held within a foliate cup. The assembly is mounted on a tiered black stone base, which is accented with a gilt bronze laurel wreath border and four scrolled acanthus feet. The lamp is rewired with a modern two-prong plug and clear plastic cord. The maker mark F. BARBEDIENNE is incised on the lower edge of the bronze vase. 34″ H x 23″ W x 23″ D.
Condition report:
The lamp is in very good overall condition and is in working order. The gilt bronze finish remains bright with minor surface wear and dust accumulation in recessed areas consistent with age. All seven frosted glass shades are in good condition with only typical minor roughness at the fitter edges. The black stone base exhibits several small nicks and chips along the edges and corners. The electrical wiring is modern and functional. Each frosted shade is in working order.
