Description
Two pieces of original paper ephemera related to the bibliography of Peter Benchley (American, 1940–2006). The first is a promotional book poster for the 1979 novel The Island. The offset lithograph features graphic cover art by Fred Marcellino, depicting a stylized orange sun setting over a teal sea with the title text reflected in the water. Marked ©1979 Alex Gotfryd / Fred Marcellino in the lower right margin and Doubleday & Company, Inc. at the bottom edge. The second item is a double-page magazine advertisement spread from Daily Variety, dated Friday, May 3, 1996, promoting the NBC television miniseries Beast. The trade ad features a large purple cephalopod eye with a swimmer reflected in the pupil, framed by tentacles. The verso contains "World News" articles from the publication. Condition report:
The Island poster is in poor to fair condition with a significant irregular tear on the right edge extending approximately three inches into the green field. Multiple creases, surface scratches, and scattered edge wear are visible throughout the sheet. Beast advertisement is in good condition with vertical and horizontal fold lines from original magazine placement. Minor corner wrinkling and light edge wear are present.
