Description
Assortment of four historical artifacts comprising a stoneware bottle, a twin-handled ceramic bowl, and two lead alloy components. The salt-glazed stoneware utility bottle features a cylindrical body with a sloping shoulder and a short, flared neck. The front of the bottle displays an impressed circular mark for J. Bourne & Son at the Denby Pottery, produced for the London-based ink manufacturer P. & J. Arnold. The twin-handled ceramic bowl is of a deep, bulbous form with a slightly flared rim and two small loop handles. The interior base is decorated with a molded circular motif featuring a central star or floral design surrounded by a ring of dots and a scalloped border. Two long, flat-backed metal bars accompany the ceramics, constructed from a gray-toned lead alloy. The first bar features two raised, threaded collars, while the second bar features one threaded collar and a flat circular plate with a small central aperture. Largest item: 13 1/4" x 1 3/4" x 1 1/4".
From the personal collection of Peter Benchley (American, 1940–2006), acclaimed author of Jaws, accomplished diver, and prominent advocate for ocean and shark conservation.
Condition report:
The stoneware bottle shows surface pitting and green-toned staining throughout the body, with minor chips to the foot rim. The ceramic bowl exhibits significant structural damage, including a vertical crack extending from the rim into the body and a small loss at the rim. The bowl surface displays extensive crazing, staining, and loss to the original slip or glaze. The lead alloy components are heavily patinated with oxidation, surface pitting, and minor rust on the threaded areas, and show slight bending along the lengths of the bars.
