Description
Group of three antique brass belt buckles recovered from underwater archaeological sites. All pieces exhibit a heavy, dark patina and surface texture consistent with long-term environmental exposure. The octagonal buckles are designed with a central vertical bar supporting a single pointed prong, and the outer frames feature decorative cast ridges at the corners. The larger buckle has a circular frame with a pin prong and a wide, rolled central plate. Marked on the verso of one buckle. Largest: 1 3/4" x 2".
From the personal collection of Peter Benchley (American, 1940–2006), acclaimed author of Jaws, accomplished diver, and prominent advocate for ocean and shark conservation.
Condition report:
The buckles show heavy overall oxidation and a dark, mottled patina across all surfaces (photo 2). Small pits, surface irregularities, and signs of corrosion are visible throughout, typical for salvaged metal items (photo 4). Prongs and bars are intact but exhibit significant wear and rounding to the edges (photo 3). The stamped inscription on the verso of one buckle is partially degraded but legible (photo 8).
