With a letter from Thomas Hardy’s wife, F.E. (Florence Emily) Hardy, dated 14th May 1928 and a cancelled check (as mentioned in the letter) issued Westminister Bank Limited, dated 30 September 1927, made out to G. Gifford and signed by Thomas Hardy.

Vertical crease to center of check, some foxing to check and letter, horizontal crease to center of letter; minor wear at corners and spine of book, fading and scratches to dust jacket, shelf wear and tears along edges and at corners and spine of dust jacket, writing in pencil on front endpaper and inside of dust jacket at front, tears to plastic dust jacket at rear.
