Charles Dickens (England, 1812-1870). American Notes for General Circulation, in 2 volumes. First edition, 1842. Chapman and Hall, London; printed by Bradbury and Evans, London. Brown cloth boards with gilt lettering, in cloth case with gilt lettering.
Corners bumped and fraying, spines fraying and worn, boards separating from spines both volumes, notations in pencil front pastedown volume I, tears and losses to front pastedown and endpaper volume I, foxing throughout and some warping to pages, bindings loose; cover of case partially separating, wear and fraying to corners and spine, some shelf wear to case.
Provenance: B. Altman & Co., New York, 7/13/1970; private collection, New York City; thence by descent.
