Attributed to Thomas Lawrence (British, 1729-1830). Oil on canvas, Juliet. Unsigned, with handwritten label "Sir Thomas Lawrence / Study in oils for the portrait of [illegible] O’Neil (famous actress) in the character of Juliet", Galerie A. Imbert Rome wax seal, and additional illegible stamps and paper labels all on verso and Sir T. Lawrence written in pencil on stretcher. 16 1/2" x 12 1/2" (with frame 24 1/2" x 20 1/2"). Heavily varnished, scratches upper right, tears and losses to the canvas along the edges and sides, crazing throughout, chip to the paint to the left of the bottom of the dress, some inpainting to dress; chips and losses to frame, painting loose in frame. Provenance: Estate of Princess Maria "Mimi" Romanoff.
