Tony Walton (British, 1934-2022). Uncle Vanya. Group of 20 pieces original costume design artwork, mixed media with gouache and ink on paper. Characters including 7 Helena (Julie Christie), 5 Sonya (Elizabeth Wilson), Astrov (George C. Scott), Vanya (Nicol Williamson), Mrs. Voynitsky (Cathleen Nesbitt), Serebryakov (Barnard Hughes), Labourer, and 3 unmarked. All except 3 unmarked with character names written in ink, Vanya with attached fabric swatch; Labourer, Serebryakov, Vanya, Sonya IV all initialed TW in ink. Vanya sheet 18" x 11 7/8". All as is and in production used condition. Created by Tony Walton for the Broadway production of Uncle Vanya, Circle in the Square Theatre, 1973. Tony Walton designed both the sets and costumes for the production, and later did the same for the 2000 revival of the show. Mike Nichols, George C. Scott and Nicol Williamson were all nominated for Tony Awards in 1974 for their work on the show, and Williamson won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Performance that year.
