Tony Walton (British, 1934-2022). The Merry Widow (opera). Group of 55 pieces of original scenic design artwork and prints. 8 set design pencil sketches on tracing paper, all with handwritten notations; 8 set sketches, 7 ink and 1 pencil, ink drawings all initialed TW, with 12 additional prints of the same images on textured paper; 8 set sketches, ink on tracing paper, all initialed TW, with 4 additional copies on tracing paper of the same images; ink on tracing paper sketch, ballroom interior; 10 cut-out model figures; 3 sets of set coloring sketches, gouache on black paper, 16 images on 3 sheets; stair railings, red ink on tracing paper; 9 copies of various sets on acetate. Ink on paper each sheet 19" x 24". With 300+ reference and research photos, a copy of the English version of Franz Lehar’s The Merry Widow Vocal Score book, a typed synopsis of the show and additional photocopies of the score. All as is and in production used condition. Created by Tony Walton for the opera The Merry Widow, Alexandra Theatre, Toronto, Canada and later planned for Broadway, c. 1987-88. According to Tony Walton’s note on the outside of the portfolio, the show was "Canceled by the Canadian producers".
