Description

This formal two-piece ensemble consists of a black wool morning coat and coordinating striped trousers, custom-tailored for the legendary American actor and comedian Jackie Gleason. Categorized under promotional and advertising memorabilia, the morning coat is constructed from heavy black wool and features a traditional cutaway tail design, a single-button front closure, notch lapels, and a left chest pocket. The rear of the coat is accented with two decorative buttons at the waistline. The accompanying trousers are designed with a flat front and feature a distinctive white vertical stripe pattern against a black ground, complete with unique button-flap pockets. A primary point of provenance is located within the interior trouser pocket: a hand-stitched tailor’s label with handwritten ink notations reading Mr. JACKIE GLEASON, Date 2-26, and No. 3. This ensemble reflects the sophisticated personal style for which Gleason was known throughout his career and likely served as part of a larger professional wardrobe for television or public appearances.
The garments show signs of wear consistent with professional use and age. The exterior wool surfaces exhibit visible lint and pilling. The interior of the coat contains a significant tear in the cream-colored armhole lining. The set appears to be original and retains its primary identifying labels.
