Description
19th Century brass refracting telescope on a mahogany tripod with case. The main telescope tube is equipped with a rack-and-pinion focusing assembly and a side-mounted brass finderscope. It is secured to the tripod by an adjustable brass alt-azimuth mount, allowing for precise vertical and horizontal orientation. The lot is complete with its original, long-form mahogany storage case featuring internal green felt-lined support cradles and brass hardware. Accessories include three interchangeable eyepieces, several brass extension tubes, a mahogany and brass steadying rod with a universal joint, and a small assortment of specialized brass tools and caps. Tripod stand 62 3/4″ H x 62 1/2″ diameter. Storage case 9″ H x 71 1/2″ L x 11″ D. Telescope 75 1/2″ L.
Condition report:
The brass components exhibit a warm, aged patina with minor surface scratches, fingerprints, and localized areas of oxidation consistent with age. The wooden tripod and storage case show typical wear including scuffs, light dings, and minor finish loss. The glass optics appear clear and free of major damage. Mechanical components including the mount and focusing rack are functional, although the instrument has not been professionally calibrated or tested for optical performance.
