Description

John Frederick Herring Senior (British, 1795–1865). Pair of hand-colored engravings, mid-19th century. Titles include Thorough Bred Mare and Foal and Hunting Mare and Foal, belonging to the series Fores’s Series of the Mothers. Both with printed signatures in the lower left. The Thorough Bred print is dated January 18th, 1855, and was engraved by J. Harris and W. Summers. The Hunting Mare print is dated April 22nd, 1854, and was engraved by J. Harris and C. Quentery. 12 3/4″ x 14″ sight size, 19 1/2″ x 20 1/2″ with frame.

Condition report:

Both prints exhibit moderate overall toning and scattered light foxing, primarily visible in the margins and sky areas. There is a degree of fading to the original hand-coloring consistent with age. The frames are in good overall condition with minor surface wear and occasional handling marks. One frame has a small puncture in the paper backing on the verso.
