Lot 165:
Description
After Toshusai Sharaku (Japanese, active 1794-1795). Woodblock, portrait of Ichikawa Ebizo as Takemura Sadanoshin. 20th-century edition after the original 1794 design. Below the signature is a circular kiwame censor seal and a fan-shaped ivy-leaf seal representing the original publisher Tsutaya Juzaburo. Two smaller rectangular seals at the bottom identify the printer as Nagao and the carver as Itakane, which are diagnostic markings for 20th-century restrikes. 16 x 10 3/4 inches.
Condition report:
The colors remain vibrant and the registration of the woodblocks is precise. There is minimal toning to the paper and no visible foxing, tears, or creases. The ink and pigments are clearly saturated through the paper and visible on the verso. The sheet is unframed.
