Description

This Japanese opium pipe features a long stem composed of nine carved, reddish-orange beads. Each bead is hand-carved with stylized motifs that appear to be calligraphic or floral in nature. The pipe’s bowl is constructed from dark-stained wood, heavily decorated with applied brass and copper plates featuring circular and serrated sunburst designs. The bowl itself contains a small white metal insert. The mouthpiece is a simple, tapered brass tube. Attached to the stem by a woven cord is a small, barrel-shaped wooden container with a matching lid, used for carrying smoking materials. Dimensions: 14 x 2.5 x 1 inches. Location: 18D

Condition report:

The item shows signs of age and use. Several of the red carved beads exhibit visible vertical cracks and some surface loss to the pigment or stain. The metal components show a natural aged patina with some oxidation and minor surface wear. The wood of the bowl and container shows minor scuffs and surface scratches consistent with handling. The connecting cord is aged but remains intact.
