August Uncurated Summer Auction
Lot 255:
Sold for: $60
Description
This hollow-cast metal sculpture depicts a female figure in classical, flowing drapery playing a stringed instrument with a round body, resembling a mandolin. The figure is cast as one piece with an ornate, Rococo-inspired base featuring scrolling acanthus leaves, floral elements, and a textured lattice pattern. A circular feature integrated into the base decoration has a jagged, broken rim, indicating it likely once held a missing component such as a glass vessel or clock movement. No maker marks, artist signatures, or foundry stamps are visible on the sculpture or its underside. Three black felt pads are attached to the bottom. 8 x 5 x 5 inches. Location: 15B
Condition report:
The bronze-toned finish exhibits extensive wear and loss, particularly on the edges and raised surfaces of the figure and base, revealing a greyish-white base metal. A small hole or casting defect is visible in the figure\'s left hand near the neck of the instrument. The central circular feature on the base is damaged, with a significant portion of the rim broken away. Surface oxidation and accumulated dust are present in the recessed areas of the casting.
