Description
Set of four hand-colored engraved celestial maps (Maps II, III, IV, and V), titled The Constellations. The plates depict various star groupings through mythological and animal figures, including Pegasus, Sagittarius, Leo, and Scorpio. Each plate includes printed text at the lower margin that reads Engraved by W. G. Evans N. York under the Direction of E. H. Burritt. A copyright notice located at the bottom of the sheets reads Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1856 by F. J. Huntington in the Clerks Office of the District Court of the United States. The engravings are on paper and feature hand-applied coloring. Each 15″ x 13 3/4″ sight size, 25″ x 23 1/2″ with frame. Condition report:
The prints exhibit toning and scattered foxing throughout the sheets. Some staining and localized spotting affect several areas of the maps. The hand-coloring shows fading consistent with age. The frames and mats are in good overall condition with only minor peripheral wear.
