Description
An Italian Empire style architectural pier mirror produced by the workshop of Giuseppe Ascoli. The frame is constructed from mahogany stained wood featuring a projecting top cornice above a flat frieze and two flanking circular columns. The frieze is decorated with a relief metal mount depicting a classical pastoral scene with figures dancing and playing instruments. The side plinths are adorned with individual metal figures dressed in Renaissance style attire, one playing a lyre and the other a flute. The columns are accented with gilded capitals and bases. The reverse of the mirror retains a partially intact paper label identifying the maker as Giuseppe Ascoli of Florence (Firenze), listing addresses on Via delle Carra and Via del Sole. The label also mentions Tullio Filippucci with an address in Rome (Via Mario dei Fiori). The mirror plate is secured by a wooden back panel held by small nails. 48 x 33.5 x 5 inches. Condition report:
Significant wood loss and chipping present at both the left and right front corners of the overhanging top cornice. The wooden frame shows general scuffs, scratches, and finish wear throughout, particularly along the lower base. The metal mounts exhibit a darkened patina and minor surface grime. The mirror plate shows scattered foxing and light silvering loss consistent with age. The wooden back panel shows gaps and shrinkage.
