Description
This 19th-century Chinese export box is crafted from a dark-stained hardwood, featuring elaborate high-relief carvings on the lid and all sides. The rectangular hinged lid is centered with a quatrefoil panel depicting three figures in traditional attire within a mountain and pine landscape, flanked by crescent reserves containing birds. The front panel features two rectangular reserves with flowering prunus or peony branches surrounded by scrolling foliate vines and a central metal-lined keyhole. Each side panel contains a cloud-shaped reserve with a hawk among pine trees. The box is constructed with a solid base plank secured with wooden pegs. 7.5″ H x 18″ W x 9.5″ D.

Condition report:
The item shows notable wear and structural damage consistent with age. A through-running horizontal split is present across the bottom plank. The lid features a vertical crack in the top-left corner molding and a significant wood loss on the front right corner. Multiple minor losses and abrasions are visible throughout the high-relief carvings. The edges and corners exhibit numerous chips and scuffs. The dark-stained finish is worn on the raised surfaces, and accumulated dust and white residue are present in the recessed areas. The key is missing, and the hinges show minor oxidation.
