Lot 325:
Description
This Japanese woodblock print (ukiyo-e) is attributed to the artist Eien, a member of the Kikugawa school active during the mid-19th century. The work depicts a woman dressed in a dark kimono featuring large white plum blossoms and pink lining. She holds a thin bamboo pole from which a small, stylized male figure or puppet is suspended. To the left, a cursive inscription provides the title, transcribed as Otomo no Asobi (Children’s Play). The print is signed at the lower left 英艶画 (Eien ga) and bears the publisher’s mark of Iwato-ya, consisting of the character Iwa inside a mountain-shaped frame (yamagata). The composition is further decorated with stylized blossoms at the top and a traditional water pattern in the upper corner.
12 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches.
WB1-4
Condition report:
The print shows significant signs of age and wear. There is heavy toning and yellowing of the paper throughout. Notable vertical handling creases are present, including a prominent central fold. Scattered foxing and brown staining are visible, particularly along the bottom edge. The colors appear faded, especially the pink pigments. The edges of the sheet show minor fraying and unevenness.
