Description

This mid-century modern two-piece hutch and buffet cabinet was manufactured by the White Furniture Company of Mebane, North Carolina. The piece is constructed with walnut veneers and solid wood secondary components. The unit consists of two separate sections. The lower buffet base, model 780-5, features two wide drawers with English dovetail joinery positioned above two sets of double cabinet doors, each opening to a single interior shelf. The upper china top, model 780-12, includes a combination of open shelving, a tall vertical cubby, and a double-door compartment with woven cane panels. The lower center portion of the upper unit contains a drop-down secretary desk flap that reveals an interior pigeonhole organizer. The unit is fitted with original brass-toned hardware, including geometric rectangular pulls on the drawers and desk flap, ornate vertical pulls on the lower cabinet doors, and simple tab pulls on the cane doors. Stenciled markings on the rear panels identify the maker and model numbers, and a stylized manufacturer mark is present on a drawer interior.

70.5 H x 54 W x 20 D inches.

Condition report:

Good vintage condition with wear consistent with age and use. The top surface of the buffet base shows scattered surface scratches, minor indentations, and areas of finish wear. The legs and lower frame exhibit nicks and scuffs. The upper unit has a notable veneer chip at the back lower corner. The back panel and side edges have splatters of white paint or plaster. The bottom interior shelf of the lower cabinet shows significant white spotting and residue. The pigeonhole organizer has minor internal scuffing. The brass hardware shows a natural aged patina.
