Description
Two original promotional posters produced for the 1977 Columbia Pictures film The Deep, based on the novel by Peter Benchley. The first is a vertical teaser poster featuring the iconic artwork of a female figure swimming towards the surface in a stream of bubbles against a dark blue underwater background. The second item is a multi-panel promotional trade supplement or poster featuring an extensive layout of production stills, cast portraits, and descriptive text regarding the filming locations in Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, and Australia. The layout includes printed cast credits for Robert Shaw, Jacqueline Bisset, Nick Nolte, Lou Gossett, and Eli Wallach, as well as director Peter Yates and producer Peter Guber. Both items are printed on paper. Largest: 56 1/4″ H x 17″ W.
From the personal collection of Peter Benchley (American, 1940–2006), acclaimed author of Jaws, accomplished diver, and prominent advocate for ocean and shark conservation.
Condition report:
The vertical teaser poster shows significant horizontal and vertical creasing from previous folding. There are visible pinholes in the upper corners and lower right corner. The bottom-left corner exhibits heavy creasing, surface loss, and delamination. A long diagonal crease is visible running through the lower portion of the central figure. The promotional supplement shows minor creasing and wear along the edges, with a vertical fold line down the center. Pinholes are present in the corners, and a small area of surface loss is visible on the left edge near the center.
