Description
16th-century Spanish shipboard drinking vessel. The vessel is constructed of a heavy-gauge copper alloy featuring wrought and hammered details throughout the bulbous body. The form includes a wide flaring rim above a tapered neck, with a single cast handle attached to the side featuring a scrolled lower terminal. The vessel displays a deep, authentic patina throughout the interior and exterior surfaces. 5″ H x 5″ diameter.
From the personal collection of Peter Benchley (American, 1940–2006), acclaimed author of Jaws, accomplished diver, and prominent advocate for ocean and shark conservation.
Condition report:
The vessel exhibits a deep mottled patina consistent with age and maritime history. Areas of green verdigris oxidation are visible on the interior surfaces and at the handle junctions. The exterior shows scattered shallow scratches and minor indentations. There is adhesive residue present on the underside of the weighted base. Overall in good antique condition with no visible structural faults.
