Description

19th-century naval boarding axe, likely British origin, constructed with a forged steel head and a turned hardwood haft. The head features a broad, flared cutting blade balanced by a long, tapering rectangular fluke or spike, designed for maritime combat and damage control. The head is secured to the handle by two integrated steel langets that extend down the sides of the shaft to protect the wood and reinforce the assembly. The wooden haft is turned with a bulbous grip at the base. Two circular holes are drilled through the grip for a lanyard attachment. 16 1/4″ L x 11″ W x 1 1/8″ D.

From the personal collection of Peter Benchley (American, 1940–2006), acclaimed author of Jaws, accomplished diver, and prominent advocate for ocean and shark conservation.

Condition report:

The steel head exhibits heavy surface oxidation, pitting, and a dark patina throughout. Minor nicks and unevenness are visible along the cutting edge. The wooden haft shows significant wear consistent with age, including scattered surface scratches, small indentations, and areas of finish loss. A small area of adhesive residue is present on the carved grip. The head and langets remain firmly attached to the wooden handle.
