The Peter Benchley Collection: Jaws, A Life of Writing, A Legacy of Stories
Lot 278:
Description
Central African short sword or large spear head, likely of Ngombe or Dhuula origin. The broad, leaf-shaped blade is hand-forged from iron and features a prominent central ridge flanked by two lateral incised lines running parallel to the edges. The hilt is constructed from a copper alloy, appearing as a socketed mount for a wooden shaft. The hilt is decorated with a series of raised rings and a conical guard at the transition to the blade. A visible longitudinal seam runs along the tapered, hollow pommel end. The metalwork displays characteristic traditional forging techniques consistent with ethnographic weaponry from the Congo Basin. 21 1/4" L x 4 5/8" W x 1 1/2" D.
From the personal collection of Peter Benchley (American, 1940–2006), acclaimed author of Jaws, accomplished diver, and prominent advocate for ocean and shark conservation.
Condition report:
The iron blade exhibits heavy surface oxidation, deep pitting, and overall discoloration across both faces. Minor irregular nicks and use-wear are present along the cutting edges. The copper alloy hilt displays significant verdigris in the recessed areas of the rings and along the seam. The socket end shows minor deformation and a visible casting or forging seam.
