The Peter Benchley Collection: Jaws, A Life of Writing, A Legacy of Stories
Lot 287:
Description
Antique cast bronze crotal sleigh bell featuring a spherical body with a prominent raised central flange. The upper hemisphere is pierced with four circular sound holes and topped with an integral, rectangular suspension loop. The lower hemisphere displays engraved concentric U-shaped line patterns surrounding a traditional elongated keyhole slot. The cast metal exhibits a dark, naturally aged patina with prominent areas of green verdigris oxidation and surface pitting throughout. Markings present near the base slot are obscured by heavy oxidation and remain illegible.
From the personal collection of Peter Benchley (American, 1940–2006), acclaimed author of Jaws, accomplished diver, and prominent advocate for ocean and shark conservation.
Condition report:
Significant oxidation and green verdigris are visible over the entire surface (photo 1). Surface pitting and general wear are consistent with an antique item (photo 2). The suspension loop and structural integrity of the casting remain sound (photo 6). Decorative engravings on the base are partially smoothed from age (photo 7).
