The Peter Benchley Collection: Jaws, A Life of Writing, A Legacy of Ocean Conservation.
Lot 136:
Description
Mixed media on wove paper, caricature of Peter Benchley with a shark. Signed and dated 1993 lower left. The drawing features bold black ink outlines and color highlights applied using airbrush and marker. Frame: 17" H x 13" W x 5/8" D.
Nearly twenty years after JAWS, the cartoonists still could not picture Peter without a shark. This bold caricature, drawn in black ink and finished in airbrush and marker, is signed “Wayne” and dated 1993, by which time Peter was spending as much time in the water with sharks as ever, now as one of their most outspoken defenders.
From the personal collection of Peter Benchley (American, 1940–2006), acclaimed author of Jaws, accomplished diver, and prominent advocate for ocean and shark conservation.
Proceeds from the Peter Benchley Collection will benefit five ocean conservation organizations: Peter Benchley Ocean Awards, WildAid, Beneath the Waves, Blue Frontier and Environmental Defense Fund.
Condition report:
The drawing is in good condition with bright colors and no visible foxing, creases, or tears to the paper (photos 3, 5). The frame shows light surface scuffing and minor finish wear along the edges and corners (photo 3). Verso backing board and mounting clips are intact (photo 8).
