Peter and Wendy on the set of The Island with Michael Caine, a terrific actor and a marvelous, funny man. Caine and Peter looked enough alike that people in town confused them. Strangers would ask Peter, “Please, Mr. Caine, may I have your autograph?” When he explained he wasn’t Michael Caine, several grew indignant: “I know you’re Michael Caine, and it’s not very nice of you to refuse.” Caine also admired the way Wendy cut Peter’s hair and asked her, more than once, to cut his.
From the personal collection of Peter Benchley (American, 1940–2006), acclaimed author of Jaws, accomplished diver, and prominent advocate for ocean and shark conservation.
Proceeds from the Peter Benchley Collection will benefit five ocean conservation organizations: Peter Benchley Ocean Awards, WildAid, Beneath the Waves, Blue Frontier and Environmental Defense Fund.
Condition report:
The photographs are in good vintage condition with minor signs of age. Several loose prints exhibit light surface curling and minor wear along the edges. The color photographs show a slight yellow-red shift consistent with the aging of photographic paper. Two photographs have adhesive notes attached to the front surface. The silver-plated frame shows light surface scratching and minor tarnishing.
