The Peter Benchley Collection: Jaws, A Life of Writing, A Legacy of Stories
Lot 236:
Description
7-foot spear featuring a large leaf-shaped polished steel head. The blade is designed with a prominent central medial ridge and two lateral cross-bars at the base of the socket, historically intended to prevent a charging animal from advancing up the shaft. The steel head is secured to a tapered, dark-stained wooden shaft with a single rivet. Unsigned. 86" L x 1 3/4" W.
From the personal collection of Peter Benchley (American, 1940–2006), acclaimed author of Jaws, accomplished diver, and prominent advocate for ocean and shark conservation.
Condition report:
The chrome-plated steel head displays minor surface pitting and scattered scratches consistent with handling. Small areas of oxidation are present on the socket and more prominently on the conical butt spike. There is adhesive residue on the socket and a small piece of tape adhered to the butt spike. The wooden shaft shows a few localized abrasions to the dark finish, but remains structurally sound.
