The Peter Benchley Collection: Jaws, A Life of Writing, A Legacy of Stories
Lot 268:
Description
Three copper and pewter ocean salvage metalware artifacts retrieved from marine environments. The circular copper pan is of hammered and wrought construction featuring a flat handle secured by 2 rivets. The handle displays 3 stamped symbols near a terminal suspension hole. The cast pewter vessel of 19th-century form has a pedestal foot and twin scrolled handles. The vessel body is decorated with horizontal incised lines and includes a domed lid with a turned finial. The final piece is a small pitcher heavily encrusted with dark marine concretion and sand, revealing oxidized metal and green verdigris where the surface is chipped. The handle of the copper pan is marked with 3 symbols; the pewter vessel is unsigned. Largest: 3/4" H x 12" L x 7" W.
From the personal collection of Peter Benchley (American, 1940–2006), acclaimed author of Jaws, accomplished diver, and prominent advocate for ocean and shark conservation.
Condition report:
General state of items is consistent with long-term marine submersion. The copper pan is heavily oxidized with significant verdigris and numerous dents to the circular body. The pewter vessel displays a misshapen rim and scattered pitting across the surface. The third vessel is entirely encrusted with marine growth and sediment.
