The Peter Benchley Collection: Jaws, A Life of Writing, A Legacy of Stories
Lot 38:
Description
Five Southeast Asian cast bronze animal figurines traditionally used as trade weights, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. The collection consists of one cobra and four elephants of graduating sizes, representing sacred Naga and elephant iconography. Each piece is cast in a copper alloy with a dark, oxidized patina. The cobra is modeled in a coiled position with a flared hood, while the elephants are standing on tiered circular or octagonal bases. The figures exhibit stylized anatomical details characteristic of regional Burmese or Thai craftsmanship. Largest: 1 3/4" H x 1 3/8" W x 1" D.
From the personal collection of Peter Benchley (American, 1940–2006), acclaimed author of Jaws, accomplished diver, and prominent advocate for ocean and shark conservation.
Condition report:
All pieces show authentic surface wear, oxidation, and pitting consistent with age and use. The cobra figure exhibits concentrated reddish-brown oxidation at the base. The features of the two smallest elephants are significantly worn and softened. Minor adhesive residue is present on the underside of one elephant.
