The Peter Benchley Collection: Jaws, A Life of Writing, A Legacy of Stories
Lot 44:
Description
Two disparate folk art items. The first is a large mammal bone, possibly a tibia, meticulously hand-carved into a tapered implement. The proximal end retains the natural joint structure, while the shaft is decorated with incised geometric patterns including cross-hatching, zig-zag lines, and parallel grooves. The distal end has been worked into a sharp, elongated point. The second item is a cylindrical segment of bamboo featuring a smooth, yellowish-tan exterior. It bears an inscription in black permanent marker reading: TO OUR FAVORITE BIG BAMBOO – THE ONE & ONLY PETER BENCHLEY! THE SEQUEL TO PORKING THE RED BALLOON! LOVE, PENNY; JIM ET AL! The bamboo shows a natural hollow core and characteristic nodal rings. Bone segment: 14 3/4" x 2" x 2". Bamboo segment: 9 1/2" x 1/2".
From the personal collection of Peter Benchley (American, 1940–2006), acclaimed author of Jaws, accomplished diver, and prominent advocate for ocean and shark conservation.
Condition report:
The bone implement exhibits natural pitting, surface staining, and minor abrasions consistent with the organic material. The bamboo segment has a longitudinal crack and splintering at the open end opposite the inscription. Both items show surface wear and minor handling marks throughout.
