Description
Egyptian Revival style carved gypsum block featuring two figures in low relief. The piece is a corner fragment with two carved faces. The first face depicts a female figure, likely a queen or goddess, shown in profile wearing a feathered crown and vulture headdress while holding an offering jar. The second face depicts the jackal-headed deity Anubis in profile with one arm raised. 4 5/8" H x 3 1/8" W x 3" D.
From the personal collection of Peter Benchley (American, 1940–2006), acclaimed author of Jaws, accomplished diver, and prominent advocate for ocean and shark conservation.
Condition report:
The stone is in good decorative condition with minor surface abrasions and small chips along the sharp edges of the relief carving. There is natural fracturing and surface texture to the unfinished reverse and top. Minor dust accumulation is present in the deeper recessed areas of the carving.
