Description
A large sunburst or headdress style brooch paired with an assortment of political and novelty pins contained in a decorative lithographed tin. The brooch features a crescent-shaped base with wirework filigree, small floral rosettes, and applied clusters of grapes with vine leaves. The outer border is composed of numerous flat, radiating metal rays with jagged tips. The pin mechanism on the verso is a horizontal pin with a simple C-clasp. The assorted pins include Soviet memorabilia featuring Mikhail Gorbachev, Vladimir Lenin, and Perestroika themes, alongside 1984 U.S. Presidential campaign pins for Mondale and Ferraro, a Ronald Reagan caricature pin, and a Heinz pickle magnet. Brooch: 3 1/4" x 4 7/8". Largest pin: 1 3/4" diameter.
From the personal collection of Peter Benchley (American, 1940–2006), acclaimed author of Jaws, accomplished diver, and prominent advocate for ocean and shark conservation.
Condition report:
The brooch shows significant oxidation and verdigris on the verso, particularly around the hinge and clasp areas. Several radiating rays are irregularly bent, and there are prominent heavy soldering marks on the reverse. The lithographed tin displays minor surface scratches and scattered edge wear. The political campaign pins show light oxidation and surface scratching on the metal reverse.
