Description
This large mantle mirror is designed in the Louis XV style, featuring an elaborate Rococo frame with a gilded finish. The crest is centered by a prominent shell and foliate motif which surmounts an inset painting on canvas. The painting depicts a pastoral scene of a courting couple in a forest setting, executed in the 18th-century French fete galante manner. 47″ H x 44″ W x 4″ D.
Condition report:
The item exhibits condition issues consistent with age and use. The gilded frame has multiple cracks and small chips in the gesso, particularly around the carved joints and curves. There is significant separation and loss of the gilded finish along the lower inner edge. One of the decorative side pendants is broken and disconnected, leaving the internal support wire exposed. The mirror plate shows minor scattered foxing and spots throughout. The reverse shows some tearing to the paper backing covering the painting area.
