Description
Walter F. Lansil (American, 1846-1944). Oil on canvas, Evening, Grand Canal. The composition captures the silhouettes of the Doge’s Palace and the Campanile di San Marco under a cloudy, moonlit sky. Signed on the verso: Evening, Grand Canal / Venice / Walter F. Lansil. / 1922. Sight: 15 x 21 in. Frame: 22 x 28 in.
Condition report:
The paint surface exhibits extensive craquelure throughout and an accumulated layer of surface grime and discolored varnish. There are minor abrasions to the paint layer. The verso of the canvas shows two structural repair patches at the center left and center right edges. The gilded frame has multiple areas of loss to the gesso and gilding, primarily along the lower edge and at the corners, exposing the white plaster and wood support beneath.
