The Gentleman's Collection
Lot 107:
Description
Pair of Arts and Crafts Mission style armchairs constructed of quarter-sawn white oak. Each chair features a curved crest rail over a splat back with five vertical slats, each detailed with a decorative inverted teardrop cutout. The wide, flat armrests are designed with beveled front edges and are supported by straight square posts that extend into the front legs. The chairs are built with contoured wooden seats and reinforced with a sturdy H-stretcher assembly. The joinery utilizes heavy square-section members characteristic of early 20th-century institutional furniture. Stenciled marks are present on the underside of the seats indicating former ownership. Marked on the underside STATE COM. OF MASS. in white and black block letters. 36″ H x 25″ W x 19″ D. Seat height 18 in. Arm height 27 in.
Condition report:
The chairs exhibit wear consistent with heavy institutional use. Significant scuffs, scratches, and finish loss are visible on the armrests and the top of the crest rails. Small white paint transfers and nicks are present on the upper edges of the back slats. Minor joint separation is noted in some areas, although the frames remain structurally sound. The oak surfaces show a dark patina in recessed grain areas.
