Tony Walton (British, 1934-2022). Triple Bill – The Lennon Play: In His Own Write. Portfolio of 19 pieces original costume and set design artwork, photographs, notes and other papers, including 8 pieces original costume design artwork, mixed media with gouache and acrylic, all on black paper, all but 2 initialed TW and mounted, various characters, Sydnees 12 3/8" x 8 5/8" (with mount 20" x 15"); original character design artwork, "Shakespearean sequence", gouache on black paper, initialed TW and titled "John Lennon’s ‘In His Own Write’ Theatre Outing" lower right, 9 1/2" x 14 1/2"; 10 pieces original set design artwork, backdrop projections, various mediums including collage with printed sections, gouache, watercolor, ink, 4 safari images and I Sat Belonely all initialed TW, others all unsigned, I Sat Belonely 12 7/8" x 20 1/2" (with mount 16 1/8" x 24 3/4"). With a printed Union Jack, a folder labeled "Slide Stuff Etc." including photos, collages and other images; a seating chart for the Old Vic, and folder of handwritten and copied notes including scene breakdowns. All as is and in production used condition. Created by Tony Walton for the West End production of In His Own Write (aka The Lennon Play), National Theatre, The Old Vic, 1968. In His Own Write was the third part of Triple Bill, which also featured A Most Unwarrantable Intrusion and Covent Garden Tragedy. In His Own Write was written by John Lennon and adapted in a one-act play by Adrienne Kennedy and Victor Spinetti. Opening night was one of the first times Lennon and Yoko Ono appeared together in public. Two of Lennon’s Beatles bandmates — Ringo Starr and George Harrison — were also in attendance (Paul McCartney reportedly skipped the show for the opening of another play, one starring his then-fiancee Jane Asher).
