The Importance of Being Earnest / Lady Windermere’s Fan (book). 3 original sepia ink on paper caricature illustrations of characters for the book The Importance of Being Earnest / Lady Windermere’s Fan, The Limited Editions Club, John Roberts Press, London, 1973. "…The address on his shirt cuff", 8 5/8" x 5 3/8" (with frame 14 5/8" x 10 3/8"); "Merriman: The dog cart is waiting sir", 9" x 7" (with frame 15 1/4" x 13 1/4"); "Lady W… Lord Augustus holding a bouquet", 9" X 7" (with frame 15 1/4" x 13"). Each initialed TW. With a copy of the book, Oscar Wilde, Lady Windermere’s Fan / The Importance of Being Earnest, green cloth with gilt lettering, brown paper dust jacket, 2 plays bound together, with each starting from one end of the book. The "Address" illustration appears on page 43, "Dog Cart" on page 73. Colophon at the end of Earnest signed in ink by Tony Walton and numbered T.W. With 13 additional drawings in sepia ink on paper; 9 sets of drawings, pencil on paper mounted on illustration board and with 29 copies and 10 negative copies of the same images in various sizes; and an envelope of handwritten and copied notes, research materials and other papers related to the illustrations for the book. Frames on all as is with scratches, separation, losses; dust jacket for book with peeling and losses to paper at corners and edges, scratches, shelf wear; book color plate after page 52 loose; loose drawings all as is with creases, losses. More than 20 years after doing the illustrations for this edition of Earnest, Tony Walton revisited the play he’d once called "The best comedy ever written". In 1996 he made his directorial debut with the off-Broadway production of Importance of Being Earnest at the Irish Repertory Theatre in New York. He designed the sets, costumes, and poster in addition to directing.
