Tony Walton (British, 1934-2022). The Importance of Being Earnest / Lady Windermere’s Fan (book). 44 pieces original illustration artwork for the book. 32 pencil and sepia ink sketches, most on tracing paper; 10 sepia ink sketches on paper; 2 sepia ink and gouache illustrations on paper. With 10 color proofs, 3 copies of the colophon page, and an envelope of photocopied sketches and reference materials. "Thank Heaven I’m in Time" sheet 16 5/8" x 11 1/2". All as is. Created by Tony Walton for the book The Importance of Being Earnest / Lady Windermere’s Fan, Oscar Wilde, The Limited Editions Club, John Roberts Press, London, 1973. More than 20 years after doing the illustrations for this edition of Earnest, Tony Walton revisited the play he’d once called "The best comedy ever written". In 1996 he made his directorial debut with the off-Broadway production of Importance of Being Earnest at the Irish Repertory Theatre in New York. He designed the sets, costumes, and poster in addition to directing.
