Tony Walton (British, 1934-2022) and Michael Sporn (American, 1946-2014). Woman of the Year. Group of original production artwork and prints. Tony Walton: Tessie Cat, marker on paper, signed lower right S. Craig, with 4 additional prints of the same image, each sheet 35 3/4" x 24"; 19 drawings of Katz and Tessie, ink, pencil and sepia ink, on paper and tracing paper (one mounted on foam core board); print of Katz in various poses. Michael Sporn: 9 photocopied pages of Katz storyboard animation, a Katz and Tessie cel, and a manila envelope containing 183 original pencil on animation paper sketches for WOTY’s animated sequences, each sheet 10 1/4" x 12 1/2". All as is an in production used condition. Katz and Tessie Cat were characters created by one of the show’s main characters, cartoonist Sam Craig (Harry Guardino), for his fictional comic strip, Katz. The characters were created by Tony Walton, and the animations for the show were done by Michael Sporn using Walton’s original designs. Created by Tony Walton and Michael Sporn for the Broadway production of Woman of the Year, Palace Theatre, 1981-1983. Lauren Bacall won the Tony Award in 1981 for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance in WOTY, and the show was nominated for Best Musical the same year.
