Tony Walton (British, 1934-2022). A Tale of Two Cities. Portfolio of set design artwork, including originals, prints, research / reference materials. Contains: folder of cobblestone design materials including 2 paint elevations for show deck, both mixed media with gouache, and 7 prints, 4 black and white copies and 3 original pencil sketches on tracing paper; Paris scrim original gouache and crayon on illustration board with 3 mounted prints and 2 unmounted prints of the same image; London scrim / drop 2 original mixed media, 1 on paper and 1 on illustration board, with 16 additional prints and color copies of the same images; Bastille drop original mixed media with 5 prints of the same image and shadow applique print with 2 additional copies; Paris Sky 4 prints of the same image and 5 additional sky prints in various colors; Finale drop (unused) 2 original mixed media with gouache and pencil and 3 prints of the same image; set model hanger with image printed on fabric; folder containing horse shadow original pencil sketch on tracing paper and 3 prints of the same image, horse model pencil on tracing paper sketch with 3 copies of the same image; lions sepia ink on tracing paper sketch; 3 tree prints – 2 with hand changes, Goats Guts pencil sketch on tracing paper, 10 reference images, an A Tale of Two Cities window card. Paris scrim largest print 16 3/8" x 27" including mount. All as is and in production used condition. Created by Tony Walton for the Broadway production of A Tale of Two Cities, Al Hirschfeld Theatre, 2008. The show opened at the Asolo Repertory Theatre in Florida before moving to Broadway. Though he would continue working as a director and occasional designer for off-Broadway, regional and ballet productions, A Tale of Two Cities was Tony Walton’s final Broadway show.
