Pop Culture Time Capsule: TV Memorabilia & Vintage Toys
Lot 88:
This is a vintage Japanese battery-operated robot known as Kasei Daiou (Mars King or Mars the Great), produced by the renowned manufacturer Horikawa, identified by the S.H. trademark. Part of the Jumbo New Action Toy series, this specimen represents the transitional period of Japanese toy manufacturing, utilizing a hybrid construction of metal-printed tinplate and molded plastic components. The robot features a striking black torso and head paired with a red lower body, accented by yellow and blue mechanical detailing. Its primary action includes a walking mechanism and a chest-opening feature that reveals mechanical firing guns. The original cardboard packaging features vibrant color illustrations and Japanese text describing the robot’s movements. Markings on the box include the S.H. trade mark, Metal Printed, Battery Operated, Made in Japan, and the ST (Safety Toy) mark. The presence of a T-series barcode (T4977590 19851 5) on the bottom panel helps date this specific iteration to the late 1970s. The item is accompanied by its original internal protective cardboard inserts. Measurements are approximately 12 x 7.5 x 5 inches.
Condition: The robot is in good cosmetic condition with vibrant colors and minimal signs of play wear. The metal-printed sections remain bright with no significant oxidation visible. The original box is complete and retains its structural integrity, showing only minor shelf wear, edge scuffing, and light creasing typical for its age. Internal cardboard supports are present. The mechanical and electronic functions are untested. All original parts and the antenna appear to be intact.
Notice to bidders: The absence of a condition report does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition. Photos are considered part of the condition report.
