Description

This original 19th-century Japanese color woodblock print (nishiki-e) is by Utagawa Kunisada, also known as Toyokuni III (1786–1865). The print features a portrait of the Kabuki actor Onoe Tamizo performing the role of Momoi Wakasanosuke from the play Kanadehon Chushingura. The subject is depicted in a traditional yellow kamishimo with a distinctive geometric crest (mon). The upper left of the image contains two inset cartouches: the right cartouche identifies the character Momoi Wakasanosuke, and the left cartouche identifies the actor as Onoe Tamizo. A vertical red cartouche on the left edge contains the artist’s signature, Toyokuni ga. Small censor and publisher seals are present at the bottom center edge. The work is printed with ink and color on paper.

Condition report:

The print shows significant signs of age and wear. The sheet appears to have been trimmed, removing the original margins. There is prominent staining and foxing across the upper half and along the right side. Multiple creases, soft folds, and handling marks are visible across the surface. The edges and corners exhibit minor fraying and small nicks. The reverse side shows heavy toning, significant ink bleed-through, and remnants of previous mounting at the corners.
