Description

This Japanese color woodblock print, or nishiki-e, is signed by the artist Keisai Eisen (1790-1848). The artwork depicts a woman in a blue patterned kimono with a black obi and red accents, standing beneath drooping floral branches. She is shown holding a paper lantern decorated with red calligraphic characters. The signature 英泉画 (Eisen ga) is visible at the lower left corner, accompanied by two circular seals positioned directly below. Vertical text on the right side of the image identifies the publisher as Izumoya. The print is unframed and the reverse shows clear impressions of the woodblocks and substantial staining from age.
13 x 8 3/4 inches.

Condition report:

The print exhibits significant overall toning and yellowing of the paper stock. Heavy brown foxing and moisture-related staining are present throughout, particularly concentrated across the lower third of the sheet and clearly visible on the verso. A prominent horizontal center fold is visible, along with multiple handling creases and irregular, slightly frayed paper edges.
