Description
Original Japanese woodblock print (nishiki-e) created by artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798–1861). The image portrays a scene from a kabuki play with two characters identified by cartouches: Motocho Tsunagoro (left) in a blue and orange patterned kimono, and the female character Koito (right) in a blue floral kimono. The lower left corner contains the artist’s signature Ichiyusai Kuniyoshi ga followed by a red Yoshikiri seal. Above the signature are the circular censor seals of Muramatsu, which date the production to circa 1847–1852. The rectangular publisher’s mark for Kamaya Kinjiro (Jokin) is also present.
14.5 x 9.75 inches.
WB1-8
Condition report:
The print shows significant signs of age and wear, placing it in poor to fair condition. There are large areas of loss and rough tearing along the left vertical edge. The paper exhibits widespread toning, browning, and foxing, particularly across the lower half. Visible vertical creases and various surface stains are present throughout. The margins have been trimmed, and the colors show some fading from age.
