Description
This nineteenth-century Japanese polychrome woodblock print, or nishiki-e, is by the artist Ichiryusai Yoshitake, an early name used by Utagawa Hiroshige II (1826-1869). The print is part of the series Edo Meisho, or Famous Places of Edo, and is titled Ueno Manka, which translates to Ueno in Full Bloom. The scene depicts figures in traditional Edo-period dress strolling through the grounds of the Kiyomizu Kannon-do temple in Ueno, surrounded by blooming cherry blossoms and large pine trees. In the upper right corner, a red cartouche contains the series title and an adjacent tan cartouche contains the specific location title. The artist signature, Ichiryusai Yoshitake ga, is visible at the bottom right. The bottom left margin features the publisher seal for Uoya Eikichi and two circular censor and date seals. These seals contain characters for the Rat year and the tenth month, dating the production of the print to 1852. The reverse side of the print shows several paper reinforcement patches used to stabilize the sheet.

Condition report:
The print is in fair to poor condition. It shows heavy overall toning and staining throughout the paper. Multiple small wormholes and small losses are visible in the central image area. The edges and corners are frayed and chipped. The verso exhibits numerous paper reinforcement patches used to stabilize the fragile support.
