Description

This mid-19th-century Japanese color woodblock print (nishiki-e) is by Utagawa Toyokuni III (Kunisada, 1786-1865). The composition depicts two women in elegantly patterned kimonos—one featuring a triangular scale motif and the other vertical stripes—accompanied by a young attendant. They are set within a spring landscape featuring flowering cherry blossoms, pine trees, and a house in the background. The work bears the artist’s signature in a red cartouche reading Toyokuni ga. A yellow publisher cartouche identifies the mark of Joshu-ya Kinzo (Yamajin). Two small censor seals to the left are identified as Hama and Magome, dating the impression to approximately 1849-1853. As a relief woodblock print, it does not possess plate marks. The impression exhibits moderate wear in the finer lines, with colors showing some fading, particularly in the pink and blue areas.

Approximate sheet size: 14.5 x 10 inches.
