Description
This Meiji-period Japanese woodblock print, or yakusha-e, depicts the kabuki actor Ichikawa Gonjuro in the role of Momoi Wakasanosuke from the play Chushingura. The scene represents the Great Prologue (daijo), as indicated by the green cartouche at the top right. The figure is rendered in a dynamic pose, dressed in a complex kimono featuring geometric and floral patterns, and wearing a tall black eboshi hat. The background depicts a landscape with cherry blossoms and a bold red sky. Several vertical cartouches provide identifying information: the central green cartouche names the actor as Ichikawa Gonjuro, and the yellow cartouche names the character Momoi Wakasanosuke. The white cartouche on the right bears the signature Sansei Kochoro Kunisada ga, identifying the artist as Kunisada III, situated above a red artist seal.

Condition report:
Fair condition. The print shows visible surface foxing, particularly in the lighter areas of the sky and on the figure\'s face. There is minor staining and pigment loss on the actor\'s face. Edges show wear and small tears. The reverse has significant blue mounting paper remnants adhered to the edges and back.
