Description
Samuel Marti style French black marble and gilt metal mantel clock, late 19th century. The case is surmounted by a large central urn finial with draped garlands, flanked by two smaller decorative urns. The structure is supported by fluted gilt metal columns with ornate capitals. The base is ornamented with a central classical mask, possibly depicting a Bacchante or Medusa, flanked by scrolling acanthus leaves. The gilt metal dial features a central repousse foliate motif and a cartouche layout with individual white enamel plaques for each Roman numeral hour marker. It has two winding arbors and open-work hands. The mechanical eight-day, pendulum-driven movement features a count-wheel strike and sounds on an internal bell. The rear brass movement plate is stamped with the characters 7 4 3. No other maker marks are visible. 26″ H x 18″ W x 7 1/4″ D. Running but not tested for timekeeping.
Condition report:
The clock is running but untested for timekeeping. The black marble case shows several small chips along the sharp edges, particularly at the front corners of the base. The gilt and patinated metal finishes exhibit moderate wear and oxidation consistent with age. Surface dust and light grime are present within the recessed areas of the ornamental castings. The front dial glass and rear beveled glass door appear intact.
