Description
Two Japanese woodblock prints of varying periods. The first is an original mid-19th century polychrome woodblock print by Utagawa Toyokuni III (Kunisada, 1786-1865). The work bears the signature Ichiyosai Toyokuni ga at the lower left, accompanied by the publisher mark for Tsutaya Kichizo and two nanushi censor seals (Hama and Kinugasa), dating the print to approximately 1847 to 1852. The second is a mid-20th century polychrome woodblock reproduction after Utagawa Hiroshige’s View of Sumida River Cherry Blossoms at Tachibana from the series Famous Places in the Eastern Capital (Toto Meisho). It features the Hiroshige signature Ichiyusai Hiroshige ga and original publisher Kawaguchi Shozo’s mark. The reverse is stamped with the Adachi name and Reproduction Prohibited marks, identifying it as a high-quality reproduction by the Adachi Institute of Woodcut Prints. Both items are unframed. Condition report:
The Kunisada print exhibits overall toning, handling creases, tape remnants on the reverse, and minor losses and fraying along the edges. The Hiroshige reproduction shows significant foxing (brown spots) throughout the paper margins and sky, along with overall toning.
